As generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) is increasingly used in language learning and teaching, it is essential to examine how instructional design and assessment should respond. This presentation explores how GenAI offers new opportunities for rethinking instructional design and assessment practices, while introducing new challenges. It discusses how GenAI tools can facilitate differentiated instruction, support real-time formative assessment, and enhance other aspects of teaching and learning. The presentation also addresses new assessment frameworks and instructional designs that mitigate GenAI’s limitations. It considers the responsible and ethical use of GenAI in both instructional and assessment contexts. Through case examples and design frameworks, the presentation shows how teaching practice can utilize GenAI affordances while mitigating potential drawbacks.
