At a diverse and multicultural university like DKU, it is important for university leaders and faculty to facilitate interaction among students and promote the development of intercultural competence. Therefore, as part of their final English for Academic Purposes (EAP) course, students produced educational videos identifying an intercultural issue on campus and making recommendations for the wider community to help alleviate the issue. The videos were shown at an interactive video showcase event on April 29th at DKU’s Performance Café.
This event, hosted by Prof. Kevin Sprague, marked the climax of the EAP course sequence and was attended by numerous faculty, staff, and students from across DKU. The audience enjoyed interacting with student video producers who offered their synopsis and rationale for their projects.
This project, now in its second iteration, serves to highlight innovative teaching and assessment at DKU, and particularly within DKU language courses. Led by Dr. Kristen Hiller and Professors Laura Davies and Kevin Sprague, alongside Chinese as a Second Language (CSL) collaborators Pan Xiaofei, Zhang Yili, and Feng Liying, it also emphasizes the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration. EAP students also collaborated with advanced-level Chinese learners from DKU to discuss intercultural issues and refine their solutions. The project accentuates authentic assessment, collaboration, community impact, and transferable learning.
